Bonnie Bateman King
The road that led me to write my first novel was full of twists and turns, hills and valleys, and many crossroads. More than once I took a wrong turn to a dead end, had to retrace my steps and try again. We all travel our own roads, some good, some bad, yet the roads we choose determine our destination.
Writing about my father’s life in The Road to LaReta, I gained a deeper understanding not only of him, but of myself—my willingness to seize an opportunity and move ahead, regardless of the outcome. I am a Bateman.
I’ve also been a dabbler in the arts most of my life, from drawing lessons at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to writing for a magazine in Sydney, Australia. On the other hand, jobs which paid the bills included teaching in Seattle, programming computers in New York City and working as a banquet sales officer and wedding consultant in Sydney, Australia. When I returned to Washington, I was a recreation director, marketing specialist, city, county and state administrator, a dating service owner, a workshop presenter and public speaker and found time to earn a master's degree in organizational development from Antioch University, Seattle. I owned a successful photography business, Bonnie King Photography, for a number of years and at the same time, taught memoir writing classes.
Now, when I’m not working on my next book, From Australia with Love, you can find me taking photographs at the local animal shelter for their website, doing other volunteer work, planning travel adventures, spending time with my grandchildren, and acting like a crazy cat lady with rescue pets Riley and Tobias.
